2021 Weixelbaum ‘Grrr’ Grüner Veltliner, Niederösterreich 1L
Sustainably farming 56 acres of vineyards with average total production of less than 9,000 cases a year, Weixelbaum is a gentleman farmer, though his ancestors have been making wine since at least 1770.
This is a pure textbook Grüner. From the wine's spicy white pepper and lemon peel aromas to the fresh Granny Smith apple and lime notes on the crisp, clean palate. One of the most versatile food wines around, you can pair this with fennel-based dishes, salads with apple and cucumber, salmon or trout, and cheeses like camembert and ricotta.
2021 Niepoort ‘Nat Cool’ Bairrada Tinto, Portugal 1L
Nat Cool is naturally “cool and funky”. It represents an innovative concept developed by Niepoort in which various producers came together to create light and easy-to-drink wines. With this selection, Niepoort wanted to show the elegant side of the grape variety Baga, normally one to display heavy tannins.
This showcases the character of Baga on the nose with beautiful aromas of strawberries, dried roses and some spice. Fresh and mineral driven, this wine is light on its feet and so easy to drink, you’ll want to keep coming back for more. Serve chilled and pair with a wide variety of dishes.
2021 La Cabassonne Bandol Rosé, Provence, FR
This winery has been family owned and operated since 1960 and all vines grown organically, though they are too small to bother with certification.
Made from 50% Mourvedre with 25% each of Cinsault and Grenache making up the balance. Very aromatic rose. Showing the typical Bandol wildness, nectarines, dried herbs, grapefruit and something slightly meaty. Heavier than you’d expect from the color, this powerful rosé has great texture and a very long and luscious finish.
Aside from being a terrific thirst-quencher, dry Rosé is an absolutely brilliant wine to pair with a ton of foods when Red or White wine just won’t do the trick. Think grilled or seared salmon, saffron infused dishes, or some classic shrimp and grits.
2020 Maestracci Vin de Corse Rouge ‘Clos Reginu’, Corsica, FR
High in the foothills of Monte Grossu mountain, inland from Calvi, lies the granite plateau of Reginu, an area long known for U Vinu di E Prove – the wine of the Prove, as the micro-climate is known. The plateau has been continuously used for vine and olive growing for centuries, and was once the site of a major olive pressing operation that supplied a large part of France with its olive oil.
The domain today is run by Camille-Anaïs Raoust, Roger Maestracci’s granddaughter. The farming is certified organic and biodynamic. The Clos Reginu is made from the domain's youngest vines and aged in concrete tank. 35% Niellucciu, 30% Grenache, 15% Sciaccarellu, 15% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre. A red berry juiciness, laced with herbs and spice, makes this medium-bodied, food-friendly wine perfect for the weeknight chill
