The 2022 Verónica Ortega Quite from the Bierzo DO in Spain is made from 100% Mencía sourced from old vines, some nearly a century old, in the village of Valtuille de Abajo. The vines grow in clay and sandy soils interlaced with quartzite and slate, giving the wine its distinctive mineral depth. Hand-harvested and destemmed, the grapes undergo a short maceration before aging for about nine months, primarily in large French oak vats with a portion in clay amphorae and used barrels. The nose opens with aromas of fresh red and black berries, wildflowers, and a touch of earthy minerality. On the palate, it is vibrant and medium-bodied, with fine chalky tannins and a lively, mineral-driven finish. This elegant yet approachable Mencía pairs beautifully with grilled pork, wild mushroom stews, and aged semi-hard cheeses, making it an ideal wine for both casual and refined dining.
