Škegro “Krš Orange” Žilavka 2022
Producer Background
Škegro Family Winery is based in Herzegovina, in the western part of Bosnia & Herzegovina near Ljubuški and Mostar. The winery is family-run and places a strong focus on indigenous grapes, organic vineyard practices, and low-intervention winemaking. Their approach is traditional and hands-off: hand-harvesting, native yeast fermentation, minimal sulfur use, and aging in neutral oak.
Grape & Terroir
Made from 100% Žilavka, a native white grape prized for its structure and freshness. The vineyards are located on steep, terraced slopes composed of calcareous marl, flint, and sandstone, benefiting from the Mediterranean climate — hot days, cool nights, and consistent breezes that help maintain natural acidity and aromatic intensity.
Winemaking & Style
-
Grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed.
-
Skin contact lasts approximately 15–20 days, giving the wine its amber/orange color and texture.
-
Fermentation is spontaneous using native yeasts.
-
Aged in used (neutral) oak barrels for several months to add depth without overt oak flavor.
-
Bottled with minimal intervention and minimal sulfites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine pours a glowing amber hue. Aromas include orange peel, dried apricot, melon, chamomile, and wild herbs, with subtle earthy or nutty undertones. On the palate, it’s dry, medium-bodied, and structured with fine tannins from the skin contact. The acidity is bright, balancing the wine's slightly grippy texture, and the finish is long with a citrus-spice lift.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile orange wine that pairs well with:
-
Grilled fish (especially sardines, trout, or mackerel)
-
Spiced poultry or pork dishes
-
Roasted root vegetables or squash
-
Soft cheeses like goat cheese or aged feta
-
Mediterranean or Middle Eastern cuisine with herbs, nuts, and preserved lemon
Serving & Cellaring
Serve slightly chilled (around 10–12°C / 50–54°F). Decanting is recommended to open up the aromatics and soften the tannins. Drink now or over the next 3–5 years as the wine continues to evolve in bottle.
