Pétrus is not classified, and it has no need to be. Produced from a singular button of ancient blue clay atop the Pomerol plateau, this is simply one of the most coveted wines in the world.
The 2006 is drinking with extraordinary generosity and complexity at nearly two decades of age: pure Merlot expression at its most profound, with voluptuous black cherry, truffles, mocha, iron, and cedar, wrapped in tannins of uncommon silkiness. The finish is a meditation. Only a handful of estates on earth produce wines of this nature — and Pétrus at 2006 prices represents extraordinary value relative to the 2009 and 2010.
"The fruit is dark with raspberry coulis, mulberry, hints of marmalade and crushed rose petals coming forth. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, gently gripping the mouth and demonstrating admirable weight and complexity. You might almost think there was some Cabernet Franc towards the finish thanks to the subtle peppery notes coming through. It is probably ready to drink now, but the substance here suggests that it will age for another decade and continue to offer pleasure long after." - 96 points, Robert Parker
