2003 Chateau Ausone, Saint-Emilion

Château Ausone is one of Saint-Emilion's two Premier Grand Cru Classé A estates, a designation shared only with Cheval Blanc and Pétrus-equivalent in prestige. The 2003 vintage, defined by Europe's historic heat wave, produced wines of unusual richness and power in Bordeaux, and Ausone's steep limestone terroir moderated extremes to deliver something exceptional: dense black plum, dried fig, chocolate, iron, cedar, and an almost baroque complexity. Twenty-plus years of development have softened the formidable structure while preserving extraordinary freshness. A wine that captures a singular moment in Bordeaux history.

The nose reveals deep blackberry, blueberry, cassis, violet, licorice, graphite, and subtle mineral notes. On the palate it is full-bodied and rich, with layers of dark fruit, seamlessly integrated tannins, and an exceptionally long finish underpinned by the estate’s characteristic minerality. It pairs beautifully with roasted game, mature beef, or truffle‑infused dishes and benefits from generous decanting.
