The 2000 Château Latour is a legendary, high-scoring First Growth Pauillac, renowned for its intense, structured, and long-lived nature. Composed of roughly 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 7% Petit Verdot. This wine is drinking beautifully now but will last for 40-50+ years.
The nose is complex and intense, with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and cassis, harmoniously interwoven with notes of cedar, graphite, tobacco, and subtle hints of leather and spice. As the wine opens, additional layers of earthy minerality, dark chocolate, and a touch of smoke emerge, adding further depth and complexity.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and remarkably structured, with firm yet velvety tannins that support the deep, concentrated fruit. The richness of the dark fruit is balanced by a fine acidity and a refined, almost seamless texture. The finish is long, powerful, and persistent, with lingering flavors of graphite, dark chocolate, and a refined minerality that reflects its Pauillac terroir. The 2000 vintage is already in a beautiful drinking window but will continue to evolve over the next few decades, gaining additional complexity and finesse with age.
The 2000 Latour (a relatively abundant 14,000 cases compared to what they produced in 2009, 2008, or 2005) is “packed and stacked.” The extremely rich, black/purple color to the rim is followed by a wine with some subtle smoke, loads of minerals, a hint of vanilla, and plenty of creme de cassis as well as roasted meat and a slight scorched earth character. Broad, savory, and rich, the wine seems to be about 5 years away from full maturity and should drink well for at least 40-50 more years. A great effort, probably eclipsed only by 2003 and 2009.
