The 2016 Château Capbern from Saint-Estèphe in Bordeaux is a superb representation of the vintage, showing both structure and elegance.
The blend is composed of roughly 69 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 percent Merlot, 4 percent Cabernet Franc, and 2 percent Petit Verdot, aged for about 18 months in French oak barrels, with a portion of new oak adding subtle depth. In the glass, it displays a deep garnet color and opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, layered with notes of graphite, cedar, and tobacco.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, offering a fine balance between ripe fruit, firm tannins, and fresh acidity. The finish is long and mineral-driven, with lingering notes of spice and dark fruit.
This vintage is approachable now but will continue to evolve beautifully over the next decade. Ideal pairings include roast lamb, grilled steak, braised beef short ribs, or aged cheeses, all of which highlight the wine’s refined power and classic Left Bank character.
