Kings Carey is the personal project from winemaker James Sparks (Liquid Farm fame). The name is a mashup of Kings Point, NY where James' wife Anna is from, and Carey, Idaho where James' formed into being. James was raised in a mormon household, but that all changed when he moved to southern California and became involved in the wine biz.
Semillon has a long history in the Ballard and Happy Canyon area of Santa Barbara wine country. For years, old timer Fred Brander used the Semillon for his Sauvignon Blanc blends, but in recent years winemakers have been taking a crack at bottling it 100%. Many of these same winemakers also had several Hunter Valley Semillon pass through their lips at one point or another and they've been chasing that dragon ever since.
It is quite the uniqe grape in that it can produce wines of intense richness, while also displaying alcohol levels of around 10-11%. A "waxy and creamy" profile is often found in Semillon, misleading people to think these wines are oaked, but often they are stainless steel fermented and only put into neutral oak. Versatile with all sorts of foods and can age at an average of 10-20 years.
James sources his Semillon from a different source every year. For his 5th vintage, the Starlane Vineyard gives James what he calls "his best Semillon" he's ever made.
